A former correctional officer at Western Tidewater Regional Jail was among 52 defendants indicted in 162 charges by the grand jury at its meeting last week.

Randall Hatfield, 54, is accused of assaulting a female inmate July 23 as the woman was cleaning at the facility, a city spokeswoman said at the time of his arrest.

He is indicted on charges of abduction, aggravated sexual battery and object sexual penetration. His employment was terminated after his arrest, a jail spokeswoman said.

Also indicted are a mother and son accused of a July 20 shooting on Wellons Street.

The 20-year-old victim survived after undergoing surgery. Taquan Deandra Burton, 19, and Gwendolyn Lee Burton-Green, 40, each are charged with aggravated malicious wounding, shooting in the commission of a felony and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. She also is charged with robbery, and he is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Also indicted is Patrick Almonzo Stovall, 32, who is accused of shooting a man from his wheelchair on April 9.

Stovall allegedly shot the 20-year-old victim as a third man pushed Stovall by in his wheelchair.

In addition, 66-year-old Michael Wayne Beck of Cartersville, Ga., was indicted on accusations he had inappropriate physical contact with a juvenile family member while visiting them in Suffolk. The alleged incident took place July 21.

Also indicted was 37-year-old Josie Michelle Babb, who was accused of abducting a 15-month-old juvenile from a house in the 100 block of parkway Street, with an 8-year-old child also in the vehicle.

She was a friend of the children’s mother, a city spokeswoman said at the time.
