Ladies’ event has healthy message

A group that helps women dress professionally so they can land a job has noticed its clients are often overweight or obese. So now, in Suffolk, it’s doing something about it.

Dress for Success Hampton Roads will promote health and fitness with Get2Stepping, an event it’s hosting for ladies at East Suffolk Recreation Center on Nov. 8.

From 6 to 8:30 p.m., ladies can enjoy things like line dancing, massages, music from DJ Chill Will, skincare and makeup demonstrations, a hula-hoop contest and more.

“We see women in an intimate setting,” said Debra Dandridge, executive director of the group’s Hampton Roads chapter.

“We already know that if you’re unemployed for a while, you tend to put on more weight. Obesity is a big issue with many of the women. … There is a large number — over 46 percent (of clients) — wearing dress sizes 18 to 24.”

The nonprofit organization wants to arm women with information and inspiration to turn their lives around, Dandridge said.

Information imparted during the event will cover “healthy eating and nutrition education, and the importance of wellness — physical as well as spiritual and mental,” she said.

Healthy people are more successful, Dandridge said, adding that employers will often find ulterior reasons not to hire obese jobseekers.

“We all know that one can’t discriminate, but other reasons can be used for why you aren’t getting hired,” she said.

“They can (say) you just don’t fit their needs, or don’t have the qualifications; but sometimes that’s not true.”

The line dancing will be a highlight of the event, Dandridge said. “You can have 50 people up on the floor dancing … and it’s just fun.”

Health and wellness coach Cristin Wood will be the MC, and nutrition and health screenings, prizes, and healthy refreshments are also planned.

Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Suffolk Partnership for a Healthy Community, Virginia Cooperative Extension and Suffolk Family YMCA are all helping out.

“We want to give them information so they can pass it on to their families and their children,” Dandridge said.

Admission will cost $10 per person, at the door or via Paypal: hamptonroads@dressforsuccessl.org
