Lakeland dominates all-region FH team

The play of Lakeland High School’s field hockey team this year continues to bring it accolades. After dominating the all-conference honors, the Lady Cavaliers filled seven of the 16 first team slots on the 4A South All-Region team. Additionally, head coach Tara Worley and senior forward Summer Parker were named regional Coach of the Year and Player of the Year, respectively.

This was Worley’s third time receiving the regional honor. This time, she did it by leading her team, currently 21-0, to the conference and regional championships.

“It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers,” Worley said.

Parker has scored a career-best 56 goals this season, to go with 22 assists. Her two most recent goals were instrumental in the Lady Cavs’ 4-2 win over Tabb High School in the regional title game.

She is the all-time leading goal scorer at Lakeland, and this year’s tally has brought her high school career total to 148.

“It’s really crazy,” Parker said of the regional honor. “I never dreamed I would have accomplished this much, and it’s really exciting knowing I have.”

Also named to the first team for Lakeland were senior forward Alexis Albright, senior midfielders Kristen Vick and Jamee Albright, senior backs Kasey Smith and Kelsey O’Leary and junior goalkeeper Erin Bradshaw.

Making the second team as a forward was senior Jessie Cox.

Nansemond River netted three selections on the second team: senior forward Kimberly Bates, sophomore midfielder Claire Janek and senior back Madison Janek.

Lady Warriors senior forward Amber Daubenspeck and sophomore back Cali Valdivieso received honorable mention.
