Four scholarships awarded

The East Suffolk High School Alumni Association has awarded scholarships to four recent graduates from Suffolk Public Schools.

The scholarships are mostly funded by alumni, supporters and friends of the alumni association. The Joyce A. Artis Memorial Scholarship is funded through donations from the late Joyce A. Artis. She was a 1966 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School.

The $1,000 W. Lovell Turner Memorial Scholarship, named after the former principal of East Suffolk High School, was awarded to William Cazene Goodman II. He graduated from Nansemond River High School with a 3.3 grade point average. He is attending Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk.

The East Suffolk High School Alumni scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Divincia Michelle Majette, who graduated from Lakeland High School with a 2.8 grade point average. She is attending Tidewater Community College.

The Joyce A. Artis Memorial Scholarships of $1,500 each were awarded to Michaela Jordan Phillips and Mildreka Asia Purdie. Phillips graduated from King’s Fork High School with a 3.7 grade point average. She is attending the College of William and Mary. Purdie graduated from Lakeland High School with a 3.7 grade point average. She is attending Virginia Commonwealth University.

The 2014-2015 scholarship applications will be available in the schools’ guidance offices and at the East Suffolk Recreation Center by February.
