Folks hoping to participate in the 2014 Relay For Life of Suffolk are invited to a kick-off party on Jan. 6.
“We have lots of stuff planned,” said Heather Howell, this year’s event chair. “It’s not just your average information session. We’re trying to do it a little bit bigger this year and really get people pumped up for Relay.”
Included will be food, games and door prizes, as well as more somber moments such as remarks by a cancer survivor.
Folks can learn more about Relay, sign up a team, volunteer as a committee member and learn the theme for this year’s event. Attendees are asked to wear their favorite sports team’s gear.
The American Cancer Society fundraiser will be held May 16-17 at Bennett’s Creek Park. Its fundraising goal is $255,000, which is reachable considering last year’s receipts totaled $252,000 even though the goal was only $240,000.
The team that shows up with the most registered participants will receive a $50 credit, and the team that provided the theme idea chosen will get a $100 credit, Howell added.
The Jan. 6 event will be held at 7 p.m. at the cafeteria at King’s Fork High School. More information on Relay can be found at www.relayforlife.org/suffolkva.
