Clegg leads Lady Warriors rampage

The Nansemond River High School girls’ basketball team completed a 3-0 week with a 48-42 victory over Booker T. Washington High School on Saturday in the Bulldog Showcase at King’s Fork High School.
“I think we’re progressing,” Lady Warriors head coach R. Calvin Mason said.
Sophomore center Sabree Clegg led her team with a career-high 22 points to go with 11 rebounds against the Lady Trojans.
The point total topped a career high she had set earlier that week when she put up 16 points to go with 12 boards on Tuesday against host Denbigh High School. Combined with a 10-point, nine-rebound performance on Friday against host Heritage High School, it seemed a breakout week for Clegg.
“We’re hoping that’s what it is,” Mason said.
He first noticed an elevation in her play during the second half of a Jan. 9 game against Deep Creek High School. She had sat out the first half of that game for disciplinary reasons, according to Mason.
“From that point, she has played well, so I’m hoping the message has gotten through, and she continues to work hard,” Mason said.
The coach said her producing two double-doubles last week in itself “makes us a better team.”
He also praised junior forward/guard Kaela Arroyo for her performance on Saturday. She only produced four points and five rebounds, “but she had some valuable minutes off the bench,” Mason said. “She did some things that encouraged me.”
Nansemond River (6-8, 3-0) hosts Lakeland High School on Friday.
