Isle of Wight County’s Division of Historic Resources and the Isle of Wight County Sesquicentennial Committee will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Battle of Smithfield on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Isle of Wight County Museum.
Events will also be hosted at the Old Courthouse of 1750, Windsor Castle Park and in the parking lot next to the museum.
Elements of the event will include living historians, the Virginia Historical Society’s exhibit An American Turning Point: The Civil War in Virginia, the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission’s HistoryMobile and guided tours along Church Street detailing the battle.
Windsor Castle Park will feature an encampment of approximately 40 re-enactors who will perform drills as well as artillery and infantry demonstrations.
Friday’s event is geared to students who have made reservations through the Isle of Wight County Museum, while Saturday’s event is devoted to the public.
