Union Baptist Missionary Church will host a day of fun Saturday in an effort to reach out to the community.
The fourth annual Community Day, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include good food, children’s activities, a meet-and-greet with church bishops and more, said Chrystal Sellers, event spokeswoman.
“The idea is to bring the community together and enjoy each other and come out for fellowship,” Sellers said.
Food will include things like fish, hamburgers, hotdogs, French fries, soda, snow cones and popcorn.
Children’s activities will include a bounce house, face painting, basketball competitions and arts and crafts.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue is scheduled to arrive with a fire truck, and Suffolk Police Department will create identification for children in case of emergency, Sellers said.
A prayer and counseling table will be set up, where folks can speak to church elders and receive “help and encouragement from the Lord to get through any situation that they might be facing,” Sellers said.
“It’s to let them know that they are not in the battle by themselves,” she said, “(and) to give them love and make them know everything is going to be OK.”
Visitors will also be able to meet the Union Baptist Missionary bishops and see the church’s welcome center, according to Sellers.
Jackie Elliott, a certified Zumba instructor, leads workouts at the church on Saturdays, Sellers said, and during Community Day will lead Zumba Mania from noon to 2 p.m., at a cost of $10 per person.
Meanwhile, also on the health and fitness front, blood pressure and diabetes screenings will be available, and the YMCA is scheduled to provide information for families and individuals on its programs.
There will also be a drum line, Sellers said.
“We are going to open the church up for anyone who wants to take a tour of the sanctuary,” she said.
“A lot of people have seen the church from the outside, but never on the inside, and it’s a beautiful facility on the inside.”
Union Baptist Church, which relocated from the corner of Nansemond Parkway and Shoulders Hill Road in 2010, is at 5414 Nansemond Parkway.
