A driver observed operating a tractor-trailer in a reckless manner in Suffolk died after a police pursuit that ended in Virginia Beach, according to the Virginia State Police.
At about 11:16 p.m. Saturday, the Suffolk Emergency Communications Center started receiving numerous calls about a tractor-trailer driving recklessly on U.S. Route 58 and Pitchkettle Road, state police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya stated.
When Suffolk police officers tried to pull the vehicle over, it struck a guardrail, sped up and slowed down, and continued traveling recklessly down Route 58, endangering other motorists, she stated.
Local police requested assistance from the state police about 11:23 p.m., who joined the pursuit eastbound from near the Suffolk scales.
Troopers were able to stop the tractor-trailer on westbound Interstate 64 in Virginia Beach, near Indian River Road. When they removed him from the cab, they noticed he was in distress, according to Anaya.
Checking his vital signs and calling in a rescue unit, the officers immediately began CPR, she stated. But Alex Eugene Senegal, 46, was later pronounced dead at Sentara Leigh Hospital.
Senegal’s family was notified of his death on Monday, Anaya stated, and the incident is under investigation.
Senegal was from McDonough, Ga., according to Anaya.
