The Leverone family and the Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk are asking folks to spare a few moments in August to help raise money for CAPS’ Night Stay program for the homeless.

The Leverone family will host its first Nick Leverone Memorial Fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the AMF Western Branch Lanes in Chesapeake. Funds raised at the bowling event will go toward a shower trailer that will give people benefiting from the Night Stay program the opportunity to take a shower every night.

“We feel that God moved in Nick’s heart,” said Don Leverone of his late son Nick, who died in a car accident last year at the age of 19. “He was a big advocate for the homeless and the underserved and underprivileged — what we call the underdog.”

Last year, the family supported the inaugural season of the Night Stay program with a donation to pay for bedding. The program was housed at various churches throughout the city and provided a safe, warm place for the homeless to sleep each night, along with meals, transportation to each church and other services.

“It was incredible,” Leverone said. “The thing we felt like we were lacking was shower facilities. A lot of the churches don’t have them.”

Organizers said last year that they had taken participants to a truck stop a few times to take showers, but that was an imperfect solution.

The shower trailer would be able to be towed any pickup truck, Leverone said. It has power and water hookups as well as a water heater and holding tank.

The Obici Healthcare Foundation has provided a $5,000 grant towards the trailer, Leverone said.

“We’ve committed to half of the facility,” Leverone said. “Through our youth groups and different CAPS churches, I don’t think we’re going to have too much of a problem. We’re basically just trying to raise awareness and let folks know to sign up.”

They’re also looking for support in the form of door prize donations and sponsorships.

“Our fundraising goal is $12,000 to $15,000,” Leverone said.

Admission for each person costs $50 and includes unlimited bowling for two hours. Leverone said he hopes many people will get involved.

“I want to make it a big community thing,” he said. “Not just a Westminster or a Leverone thing.”

Hayden Blythe, director of Hope for Suffolk at Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church, a partner with CAPS, and the vice chair of the CAPS board, said support from the community is the critical factor in CAPS, which is run by and funded by a partnership of some two dozen churches in Suffolk and the surrounding area.

“We’re grateful for the community support of the Suffolk Night Stay program, of CAPS and the partnership of the community, how enthusiastic people have been,” Blythe said.
