Severe thunderstorm watch canceled

UPDATED 7:23 p.m.: The severe thunderstorm watch has been canceled early.

UPDATE 3:08 p.m.: The severe thunderstorm warning has expired. Suffolk remains under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. In addition, an urban and small stream flood advisory has been issued for the city. Motorists should watch for high water in low-lying areas and near bodies of water due to excess runoff from the storm. Never drive into areas where water covers the road.

More than 300 Dominion Virginia Power customers in Suffolk are without power.

Earlier: Suffolk is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 2:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service said the line of storms is capable of producing golf-ball-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour, as well as destructive lightning and very heavy rain.

The service urges folks to get inside a substantial structure and move to an interior room on the lowest floor.

Motorists should not drive into areas where water covers the road.

The city canceled the roving ranger program at Bennett’s Creek Park due to the weather. Cypress Park Pool also has closed for the rest of the day.
