‘Move those barrels’ on Bridge Road

To the editor:

Since Monday, the interior lanes of Bridge Road have been closed to accommodate the water main replacement project.

I’m sure most of us would agree that replacing the old pipe and increasing the pipe’s size will one day prove worthwhile. But I cannot understand why we need the lane closures to be in place so early and for such a long distance to accommodate these needs.

According to the paper, most of the work will take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., so why not open those lanes at the end of the contractors’ workday? The contractors are long gone before the evening rush hour begins.

As I’ve traveled the road this week, I see no obvious reasons the lanes should be closed after the work is done for the day. There is no equipment in the lanes, no construction to the lane — only within the median.

So why not move those barrels and let the rest of us get home without the frustration of yet another traffic jam?
