Nansemond-Suffolk Academy had a recent graduate and a rising senior make it to Thursday’s final round of the 62nd Virginia State Golf Association Junior Stroke Play Championship in Williamsburg, where they finished among the top 33 golfers.

Trey Wren, who graduated from NSA this year, was playing in the event for the third time and was disappointed with his 31st-place finish.

“Last year I finished 21st,” he said on Thursday. “I should have done much better this year. I really had a bad day today.”

He shot an 8-over-par 80 at Williamsburg Club, adding to a 54-hole total of 12-over 228.

He was pleased with his play in the first round, when he shot a one-under 71, and stated he played decently in the second round before a bad finish left him with a 77.

His former NSA teammate Keith Cooper finished in a tie for 33rd, producing a 54-hole total of 14-over 230. It was his second time competing in the event and his first time making the cut that comes after 36 holes.

“It was a great experience,” he said. “I had the Virginia Wesleyan (College) coach come out and watch, which was cool.”

Wesleyan coach Bryan Hearn is in the process of recruiting Cooper, who shot an 81 in round one, a 73 in round two and a 76 in round three.

“Today was fine, I just didn’t putt well,” he said on Thursday.

Cooper will next compete in the Portsmouth City Amateur, and Wren’s next competition will come after beginning his attendance of the International Junior Golf Academy on Aug. 15.
