Suffolk had at least a couple of familiar faces that participated in the L.E.V.O.C. Family Services Portsmouth City Amateur last weekend, and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy rising senior Keith Cooper made his inaugural showing at the event a solid one.

He shot a two-under-par 70 in round one last Saturday and then a five-over 77 on Sunday while competing in the championship flight of the tournament at Bide-A-Wee Golf Course.

“I came in the first round tied for third and then finished solo seventh (in the championship flight), and I was proud of my performance,” he said.

Adam Horton finished as the event’s overall champion, shooting a 70, then a 68 for a two-day score of six-under 138.

Of his own performance, Cooper said, “The first day was great, the second day I just couldn’t get anything going, but overall the experience was good.”

He was pleased to play in a field of good players, and later explained why he chose to compete in the event.

“Some of it’s for fun, but just mainly experience and playing longer courses,” he said.

He noted he and his fellow golfers covered about 6,800 to 6,900 yards over the weekend, whereas the junior tournaments he has participated in generally only go about 6,500 to 6,600 yards.

Suffolk’s J.P. Leigh also competed in the tourney, which was sponsored by Life Engaged through Vision Outcomes and Character Family Services. He finished fourth in the senior flight, shooting a 75 on day one and a 70 on day two for a two-day score of one-over 145.

Cooper will be back in action today and Sunday in a College Prep Golf Tour event held at Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg.
