Local Subway restaurants are once again going all out for their support of the Stop Diabetes “Helping Hands” fundraising campaign for the American Diabetes Association.

The eatery on North Main Street in front of Walmart is once again the top restaurant in Eastern Virginia — including Hampton Roads and central Virginia — so far this year, according to Deanie Eldridge of the American Diabetes Association.

The store has raised about $3,000, said Bristy Ball, owner of Magnum Enterprises, which owns that store and other Subway restaurants in Suffolk and Isle of Wight County.

“We find it to be a really important cause,” Ball said. “It affects a lot of people. It’s hard to find anybody who’s not affected by it now. If you’re going to do something, you do it 100 percent.”

Ball said her group of nine stores has raised more than $10,133. It includes both restaurants on North Main Street, as well as on Holland Road (also in the top 10 in the region) and Centerbrooke Lane, as well as restaurants in Smithfield and Windsor.

Ball also said that the local market surpassed $30,000 in the campaign last week.

“They’re working really hard,” Ball said of her employees. “They’re doing pretty good.”

The fundraising campaign ends on Aug. 31.
