Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Noah Giles, junior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football: He was everywhere in a 47-26 home win over visiting Saint John Paul the Great Catholic High School on Friday night, accounting for 246 of his team’s 383 yards from scrimmage. He had two catches for 124 yards and two scores, six carries for 122 yards and a score and he also returned the opening kickoff about 85 yards for a touchdown.
  • Keyon Ross, senior for King’s Fork High School football: He turned in a standout defensive performance in Thursday’s season-opening 55-0 win over visiting Deep Creek High School. A transfer student from Ohio, he was quick to the ball, recording several hard tackles and later snagging an interception he returned 49 yards for a touchdown.
  • Desiree Patterson, senior for Nansemond River High School field hockey: She was a key factor on offense in both games during the Lady Warrriors’ 1-1 week. In a loss on Monday against host Grassfield High School that went to strokes, she scored both NR goals in regulation to keep her team alive. She also assisted the first goal to get things going in Wednesday’s 2-1 home win over Great Bridge High School.
  • Kendall Lewis, sophomore for Lakeland High School field hockey: Juggling her own youth and inexperience along with her team’s and the pressure of being a Lady Cavalier, she scored all of Lakeland’s goals during a 1-2 week. She put one in during the final minute of Monday’s season-opening home loss and scored both in Wednesday’s 2-0 road win.
