A traveling memorial to the dedication of firefighters and the devastation of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks will visit Suffolk and Franklin later this week.

The Rescue Remembrance Project will bring the Rescue 4 rig to the area. A group of retired firefighters purchased fire trucks damaged in the attacks, restored them and sends them around the country as an educational tool and historical artifact.

The Rescue 4 unit was severely damaged, and all six firefighters who responded aboard it died, in the World Trade Center collapse.

“The biggest thing is for the youth to come see a piece of history that they’ve only heard about,” said Capt. Richard Grizzard of the Franklin Fire Department.

He said he decided to bring the memorial to Franklin after hearing it was being hosted by the Newport News Fire Department during August and September.

Grizzard said visitors will be able to get up close to the rig, but he’s not sure if folks will be able to get inside.

Donations toward the memorial’s fuel, maintenance and travel costs will be accepted at both locations.

The truck will be on display Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Constant’s Wharf, 110 E. Constance Road, Suffolk. It will then move to Franklin Fire and Rescue from 4 to 8 p.m. at 100 S. Main St., Franklin.
