The wins are coming narrowly, but they are coming for Lakeland High School’s field hockey team.

The Lady Cavaliers got back to .500 for the season on Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over visiting Oscar Smith High School.

“I think they played really well,” Lakeland coach Cortney Parker said of her players. “Again, offense is where we’re struggling.”

Finishing was an issue, but once the Lady Cavaliers earned a few penalty corners, that helped spur on some offensive production.

“Out of those corners, we got a goal,” Parker said, noting it was sophomore Lexis Munford who scored with 17:54 to go in the second half.

“She seems to be at the right places at the right time,” Parker said. “She’s definitely going to be a factor the remainder of the season.”

Junior Taylor Roten assisted Munford on the goal and also drew praise from the coach.

“She played a very good game,” Parker said. “And Kaylene Thomas, she’s my left back, she made significant contributions to the defense.”

Parker said the Lady Cavs defense proved to be the deciding factor of the game.

“Our defense and our mids were connecting really well,” she said.

Lakeland senior goalkeeper Erin Bradshaw registered seven saves and her first shutout of the season.

The Lady Cavs allowed six penalty corners, and also earned six on the offensive end.

Today, they visit Tabb High School, which they defeated 4-2 last year in the 4A South regional championship game.

“That’s going to be a really tough game,” Parker said. Noting her girls were not shrinking from the challenge, she added, “They’re looking forward to it, though.”

The schedule remains challenging for the Lady Cavaliers (2-2) next week as they host Nansemond River High School (2-1) on Monday. Parker remains pleased with their progression this year.

“They’re showing improvement every game, and that’s all I can ask from such a young team,” she said.
