A Suffolk church will hold a fundraiser later this month for a pastor and his family who are moving to Haiti to spread the gospel there.
The fundraiser at Liberty Spring Christian Church, 4213 Whaleyville Blvd., will raise money for Chris and Christina Surber and their four children. Chris Surber currently is the pastor at Cypress Chapel Christian Church.
“I think we all had the feeling that the good Lord really laid it on our hearts,” said Sue Nichols of Liberty Spring Christian Church. “They’re neighbors, they’re friends, and we would like to do the best we can for them.”
The fundraiser on Sept. 20 will raise money for the Surbers’ ministry, Supply and Multiply, through meals of fried fish and sides, a bake sale and a silent auction.
“We want to raise money and spiritual support,” said Eric Surratt, a member of Liberty Spring.
The meals will be provided by Nixon’s and will cost $10.
“All the proceeds, after we pay Nixon’s for the meals, will go directly to Dr. Surber and his family,” Surratt said.
Bakers from several churches are providing baked goods, and a silent auction featuring lightly used farm equipment, among other highlights, will take place.
“They need as much support as we can get to them,” Surratt said.
Nichols said the church and the Surbers are grateful for people who have supported the fundraiser so far.
“We’re just so very thankful for the people who have helped, who have volunteered their time and who have bought tickets,” Nichols said.
Tickets for the meals will be sold through this week, with Sept. 14 being the last day to order so that organizers will have a head count for the food.
For tickets, call Sloan Butler at 619-3304, Eric Surratt at 292-9950 or the church office at 986-4403.
