The King’s Fork High School girls’ volleyball team defeated visiting Lakeland High School in straight sets on Thursday, 25-12, 25-21, 25-10.

“We had spurts where we played well and sometimes we kind of played down a little bit, but overall, I was pleased with their performance,” Lady Bulldogs coach Sarah Porter said of her players. “It was probably our best passing performance so far this year.”

Senior outside hitter Taylor Harrell led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 kills and seven digs, while sophomore middle/outside hitter Nia Nickerson added seven kills. Sophomore setter Cydney Nichols handed out 17 assists.

Porter also highlighted senior libero Tiffany Cox.

“She’s a big factor when it comes to our passing,” the coach said. “She’s pretty consistent.”

Lakeland coach Tarijuana Napoleon felt an unfortunate bit of a déjà vu as she watched her Lady Cavaliers play.

“They made a lot of mistakes,” she said. Alluding to their match against Nansemond River High School on Tuesday, she added, “I did not see any improvement.”

Lakeland (0-5, 0-2) visits Hickory High School on Tuesday and Indian River High School on Wednesday, and it hosts Western Branch High School on Thursday.

With Thursday’s victory, the Lady Bulldogs built on the success they experienced at the Endless Summer Tournament, in which they participated last weekend and went 4-1, taking first place in the silver bracket.

“We definitely needed those wins to kind of give us some confidence,” Porter said.
