William “Joe” Donovan, 55, passed away on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, at Maryview Medical Center. He was the son of Joyce Ann Donovan and the late William F. Donovan.

Joe was an admired coach for the AYSO Black Sox soccer team from 1999 to 2003. He also served 36 proud years of employment at the Newport News Shipyard. Joe never met a stranger or an enemy.

Besides his mother, Ann, of Portsmouth, Joe is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary “Molly” Donovan; daughters, Virginia Smith and husband, Bobby, and Katie Donovan; son, Alton Donovan, all of Suffolk; sisters Laurie Rosenthal, husband, Keith and three children, of Charlotte, N.C., and Tracy Holland, husband, Kenny, and three children of Surry.

A funeral service will be held at Baker-Foster Funeral Home, 5685 Lee Farm Lane, Suffolk, on Tuesday Sept. 23, 2014, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Neal Sasser officiating. Burial will follow the service at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Suffolk Humane Society, P.O.
