World Class Gymnastics Too in Suffolk had less participation than it had hoped for on Saturday as it hosted its first National Gymnastics Day fundraiser to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

But the gym plans to extend the window of opportunity for donations in order to meet its goal of $500.

Nicole Marshall, manager and head coach at World Class Gymnastics Too, said for a first-year endeavor, the event went decently.

“I’m hoping that each year it builds a little bit more,” she said. “We were hoping for more, but it was the first year.”

From 1 to 4 p.m., the facility offered an open gym to the community at a cost of $5 an hour per child, while also holding a bake sale and a 50/50 raffle.

The event raised about $380, but to meet the $500 fundraising goal, Marshall said the deadline will be pushed to next week, and possibly one more week after that.

She said around 35 youths enjoyed the open gym.

“It was mostly kids that attend our gym, and then many of them brought some of their friends,” Marshall said.

The gym also hosted a blood drive on Friday in honor of former coach Joe Bystrom, who died of leukemia. Fifteen people donated blood, including Marshall; she noted many others wanted to, but were not allowed due to certain donation restrictions.

In another philanthropic effort, World Class Gymnastics Too now has a donations box for Special Olympics.

“We’re just trying to do what we can to help others,” Marshall said, adding the facility has so many people coming through its doors, those running it feel they are in a good position to try to give back.
