The field hockey teams of Nansemond River High School and King’s Fork High School enjoyed distinct wins on Friday and Thursday, respectively, while Lakeland High School closed out its week with an exasperating loss on Wednesday.

The Lady Warriors returned to action for the first time in a week and produced a 5-0 win against host Deep Creek High School.

NR senior Desiree Patterson continued her trend of putting up impressive offensive numbers this season by contributing a hat trick. Juniors Jaclyn Mounie and Ashley Hiltabrand also scored.

The Lady Bulldogs dominated visiting Southampton High School on Thursday, coasting to a 10-0 mercy rule-abbreviated victory.

“We pretty much changed our approach to the game once the score got to the mercy limit,” KF coach Courtney Van der Linden said. “It was nice to get the opportunity to work on a few things.”

She had her players try some things they have not necessarily built up the confidence to try in the past, like looking for opportunities to spread the field before getting into attack mode.

Leading the goal-scoring charge for King’s Fork was senior Randi Fiel, who had a hat trick. Sophomore Skylar Wall, who usually mans the goal for her team, was put in the field in the second half and scored twice.

Sophomore Nia Vargas also scored twice, while seniors Rachel Gist and Kayla Filio and freshman Hannah Marston each scored one goal apiece.

Assists came from sophomore Selina Davis, who had two, and Gist, junior Emma Marston, sophomore Hannah O’Neal and freshman Amber Suits, who each had one.

On Wednesday, Lakeland recovered from a poor performance in Monday’s 2-0 loss at King’s Fork, but fell short to host Grassfield High School in frustrating fashion, 1-0.

“We had two of our goals called back, and (the Lady Grizzlies) scored in the last three minutes and 49 seconds of the game,” Lady Cavaliers coach Cortney Parker said.

Parker said both of the goals were legitimate, but in one instance, the nearest referee could not see the play and deferred to the referee back at midfield. When they could not say for sure if the shooter was in the circle, they called it back.

In the other case, a referee awarded Lakeland with a penalty corner after Grassfield committed a penalty, rather than simply giving the Lady Cavs the goal they scored on the play.

The coach was pleased with her how her team played, however.

“To me, it’s the best game they’ve played all season,” she said. “I changed the lineup as far as positioning.”

On Tuesday, Nansemond River (7-3, 2-0) visits Denbigh High School, King’s Fork (6-4, 1-1) visits Phoebus High School and Lakeland (4-8, 0-2) visits Heritage High School.
