Q: I know that the old (city hall) building is being torn down and replaced with a new parking lot. What is happening to the 440 Market Street building? I notice most of the offices are moving from there as well. — M.K.
A: The building at 440 Market St., known as the Human Resources building because that department, among others, has been housed there, will remain in place.
Some departments housed there, including Public Works administration, Information Technology and others, are moving to the new city hall building at 442 W. Washington St. However, the Voter Registrar’s office will stay, and its space will get larger as voting machines formerly housed in the old municipal building are relocated, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.
In addition, the Virginia Cooperative Extension office will remain there. Additional space in the building will be used to relocate other city offices and uses from elsewhere in the city, but exactly which ones has not yet been decided on, Klink said.
