Tigers swim right through River

What happened on Friday night at Oscar Smith High School was not complicated to coach David Coccoli of the visiting Nansemond River High School Warriors.
“They shut us down, and they did whatever they wanted on offense,” he said of the Tigers.
Oscar Smith’s football team jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and ended up with a 49-7 win.
Coccoli pointed to youth and inexperience as reasons why the Warriors were at a particular disadvantage this year against the perennial 6A state title contenders, but he saw the game as a positive learning experience for his young players.
“It’s good for our kids to know where we want to go — Oscar Smith is the measuring stick,” he said. “It is good for my kids to see what they do.”
In accounting for what makes Oscar Smith great, he said it includes a combination of having a large student body to pull from and great coaching, giving special praise to Tigers coach Richard Morgan.
“He has established a well-run, efficient program for the last 10 years, and they have a mystique about them that we want to get to,” Coccoli said.
The mystique grew on Friday night, as Oscar Smith extended its win streak against Southeastern District opponents to 73 games. The streak stretches back to 2006.
The Warriors got on the board near the end of the game when junior quarterback Chris Henderson scored on a 15-yard touchdown run.
“We’ve got to move forward,” Coccoli said, thinking about the rest of the season. “We’ve got to get back to work starting tomorrow.”
Nansemond River (3-3) will complete its regular season cross-city matchups next Friday night when it hosts King’s Fork High School (5-1).
