Best foot forward

Organizers of the 2014 Suffolk Peanut Fest may have been thinking of a line from a popular 1970s television show as they watched thousands of people stream into and out of the event’s gates at the Suffolk Executive Airport during the weekend.

“I love it when a plan comes together” was the familiar tagline for “Hannibal” Smith, leader of the A-Team in the television show by that name. It also would have been an appropriate exclamation for folks involved in putting together the popular festival in Suffolk this year, as just about everything that was planned for the event went off without a hitch.

With memories of 2013’s monsoon-like conditions — and the resulting small crowds and receipts — still haunting them, organizers kept a wary eye on the skies as the event got under way on Thursday and crossed their fingers that the forecast thunderstorms would hold until the festivities were over. For the most part, they got their wish, as there was only light rain Friday and Saturday nights while the event was in progress.

Indeed, Friday’s attendance was at near-record levels, organizers said, and both Saturday and Sunday seemed similarly well attended.

Peanut Fest is a huge undertaking involving scores of volunteers. The fact that it has become one of the most anticipated events in Southeastern Virginia is a testament to the commitment and zeal brought to it by all those involved in its planning and presentation.

All of those involved in making this year’s festival such a resounding success should be proud of the part they played in helping to put Suffolk’s best foot forward this year. Their plans came together marvelously.
