The Driver community’s annual fall festival this weekend will include alcohol sales for the first time on its 21st birthday.

“This is the first year we have been granted an ABC license,” said Lana Sadowski, festival organizer with her partner, Terri Johnson. “It goes so well with all the barbecue and oysters and all the great festival fare. It’s interesting we got it (the license) this year, because it’s our 21st anniversary.”

More than 97 vendors have signed on this year, Sadowski said. Driver Days runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

This year’s grand marshal is Craig Parker, the very man who started the event 21 years ago.

In Sadowski’s estimation, professional wrestling is the highlight of Driver Days this year. “It’s something new,” she said. “I think it’s going to create a lot of excitement.”

Matches are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to noon and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Also on Saturday, car show registration will occur at Berea Christian Church between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Opening ceremonies including the grand marshal’s arrival, as well as the parade, which kicks off at 9 a.m.

Musical acts will include Arthrighteous Brothers from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Pridemore from noon to 1:30 p.m., Aisle 5 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and Kasey Rae Meeks Band from 4 to 6 p.m.

Sunday gets started at 9:30 a.m. with the Sherri Parker Memorial Poker Run, while the festival opens to the public at 11 a.m. On the stage, the Master’s Hand Quartet will play from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Luke Willette and the Show Me Band from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and Aisle 5 from 3 to 5 p.m., when the festival ends.

The Parade of Bikes begins at 1 p.m., and the Pet Costume Contest runs from 2:30 to 3 p.m.

And then there’s the cornhole competition, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday and continuing at noon Sunday. To pre-register — which is required — or for more information, call Ken Parsons at 679-2488.

Another highlight this year will be the Wellness Jamboree, sponsored by the Obici Healthcare Foundation, with free health screenings and shots from Walgreen’s, plus support from Western Branch Family Chiropractic Center, Western Branch Medical Reserve, Obici Cancer Advocates, Onelife Fitness, Lions Eye Mobile, Taylor Orthodontics and more.

“I thought that since we’re new in the Driver community, we would step in and see what we could do to help increase business,” Sadowski said of her and her partner taking on festival duties.

All proceeds go to local charities. Sadowski explained that each Driver Merchants Association member recommends two charities.

“We are really going to try to give to each one,” she said. “Everyone has something close to their heart.”
