Don’t miss Driver Days

The village of Driver is the place to be this weekend, as folks there put on their annual shindig, Driver Days.
Celebrating its 21st anniversary, the event promises to be bigger and better than ever, and that’s saying a lot, considering the already outsized popularity of the celebration in comparison to the diminutive size of the village.
New to the two-day festival this year will be alcohol sales and professional wrestling, two things that might not normally sound like they should go together. Both additions, however, are likely to be a hit with the thousands of people who attend the event, and both will help raise more money for the favored charities of members of the Driver Merchants Association, each of whom chooses two organizations to benefit from the proceeds of the event.
Driver Days kicks off Saturday at 9 a.m. with a parade featuring grand marshal Craig Parker, who started the event 21 years ago. Musical acts will include Arthrighteous Brothers from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Pridemore from noon to 1:30 p.m., Aisle 5 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and Kasey Rae Meeks Band from 4 to 6 p.m. Wrestling is set to take place at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Sunday gets started at 9:30 a.m. with the Sherri Parker Memorial Poker Run, while the festival opens to the public at 11 a.m. On the stage, the Master’s Hand Quartet will play from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Luke Willette and the Show Me Band from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and Aisle 5 from 3 to 5 p.m., when the festival ends. The Parade of Bikes begins at 1 p.m., and the Pet Costume Contest runs from 2:30 to 3 p.m.
Throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday, there will be a car show at Berea Christian Church, vendors will be on hand selling all manner of goodies and a Wellness Jamboree, sponsored by the Obici Healthcare Foundation, will provide free health screenings and shots from Walgreen’s, plus support from Western Branch Family Chiropractic Center, Western Branch Medical Reserve, Obici Cancer Advocates, Onelife Fitness, Lions Eye Mobile, Taylor Orthodontics and more.
There will be plenty of kids’ activities, along with demonstrations and exhibits that will be both fun and educational for the whole family. And a cornhole competition will run throughout the event.
Driver Days is one of the things that makes Suffolk unique in Hampton Roads. Don’t miss it.
