A postgame recap

The team that Suffolk’s Kayla Godfrey was pulling for did not end up winning Super Bowl XLIX, but that did not stop her from enjoying a special day working at the big game in Glendale, Ariz.
“It was a lot of fun,” she said. “It was very crazy and chaotic, though, but it was great.”
Godfrey was there thanks to an opportunity that the University of Tennessee has — for nine years running — afforded some of its students in which they receive valuable experience learning the business side of sports at the Super Bowl.
Currently studying sports management, she applied to go and was one of 12 selected.
Around 9 a.m., Godfrey and the team from UT took a bus to University of Phoenix Stadium where the Super Bowl was played. The students had responsibilities there that started in the morning.
“There were two private tailgate parties downstairs,” Godfrey said, noting she and the team escorted the guests down to them.
The students answered basic questions and directed fans on where to go.
“We were pretty much taking care of the private party guests,” she said.
These duties lasted for about four hours until 3:30 p.m., which was an hour before game time as Glendale, Ariz. is located in the Mountain Time Zone.
Godfrey said the UT team got some lunch and watched the first half of the game downstairs but were released just before halftime.
There were two things Godfrey shared Saturday morning that she hoped she would be able to do on Sunday, and they both came to pass — she caught sight of the field, and she got to see Katy Perry perform.
Godfrey cited a top highlight from the trip was “running up the stairs and getting a good spot” for the halftime show.
She and a friend on the team found a spot, though they did not have anywhere to sit, and they were visibly enjoying the music.
“A Seahawks fan, he noticed how much we were getting into it,” Godfrey said, adding he told them, “You guys can have my seat, I don’t really care right now,” as long as he had it back by the second half.
Godfrey was particularly thrilled by Katy Perry’s surprise guest, a notable Portsmouth native.
“I guess my favorite part was Missy Elliott coming out,” Godfrey said. “I absolutely love Missy Elliott.”
The UT team’s free time continued for a little while after halftime.
“We watched the third quarter and then had to go back downstairs to work postgame,” which involved continuing to give assistance to private guests, she said.
Godfrey and the team returned to Tennessee on Monday, experiencing an abrupt shift from the extraordinary events of the exciting trip to the ordinary events of their college schedules.
“It kind of bummed me out thinking about coming to class today,” she said on Tuesday.
But she noted she loved being in the Super Bowl environment, and it gave her fuel for her future.
“It motivated me to really excel as much as I possibly can this last year so I get a really good internship,” she said.
