Player of the week

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  •  Keith Stagg, junior for King’s Fork High School basketball: He was key to his team’s efforts in achieving two more conference wins. He recorded 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists to help hand host Heritage High School its first conference loss on Tuesday, 51-47. In Friday’s 68-40 home win over Nansemond River High School, he contributed 12 points and six assists.
  • Kadeem Middleton, senior for Nansemond River High School track and field: He won the boys’ 500-meter dash at the conference meet on Wednesday with a time of 1:06.45, a personal record. His coach noted that this season, the time ranks No. 19 in the nation, No 10. in all of Virginia, and No. 1 in the Group 4A classification.
  • Brianna Copeland, freshman for Lakeland High School basketball: She has been a young source of strength for the Lady Cavaliers all season and stepped up in a big way in Tuesday’s road game against Denbigh High School. She contributed a game-high 23 points, plus five rebounds, to a 62-58 conference win.
  • Harper Birdsong, junior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy basketball: She was a leader for her team this past week as she has been all season long. In Friday’s 49-46 home win over Cape Henry Collegiate School, she produced 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. In Tuesday’s 42-22 home win over Norfolk Academy, she registered 23 points, four assists, three boards, three steals and a blocked shot.
