A 51-year-old Suffolk man committed suicide Friday morning by jumping off the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, according to Virginia State Police.
Police responded to the call at 7:53 a.m. The U.S. Coast Guard, Norfolk Fire and Rescue and Hampton Police Fire and Rescue assisted in rescuing the man from the water, according to state police Public Relations Director Corinne Geller.
He was transported to Bon Secours DePaul Hospital in Norfolk but died at the hospital, Geller said.
It was ruled a suicide based on witness accounts and the state police investigation, Geller said. Witnesses said the man parked his vehicle on the right shoulder of the westbound lanes, exited the vehicle and jumped off the bridge.
