Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
Robert Fitzwater, senior for Nansemond River High School baseball: He continued to be important to the Warriors’ turnaround. In Wednesday’s 5-4 home win against defending Group 4A state champion Hanover High School, he got the pitching win, plus a hit and an RBI at the plate. He had a two-run home run and another pitching win in Friday’s 7-4 road win against Kempsville High School.
Sydney Wash, senior for King’s Fork High School softball: She was a major factor in helping her team defeat Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 2-0 on Thursday in a rare matchup between Suffolk public and private schools. From the circle, she allowed just one hit and no walks, and she threw 10 strikeouts in a timed game that ended in the bottom of the sixth inning. At the plate, she also got one of her team’s nine hits.
