Wine shop changes owners

The new owner of Bon Vivant Wine & Brew in North Suffolk hopes to gradually bolster the store’s craft beer offerings but says he will first concentrate on a seamless transition.
Scott Miles, who was a regional vice president for a printing company, said he closed on the transaction with seller Brenda Gillihan last week.
“My wife and I bought it,” Miles said. “She’s not going to work in the business. She will keep her day job, and I will work here.”
A craft beer enthusiast and home-brewer, Miles said he had considered opening a dedicated craft beer store, “but it never really was practical.”
“When I saw Bon Vivant was for sale, it piqued my interest,” he said. “With the wine being a big part of the business as well, it just made it more feasible. But I think there’s a huge opportunity for craft beer.”
Miles said he has enjoyed exploring the craft beer scene that has exploded across America in recent years.
“There’s a lot of creativity, and it’s truly a craft,” he said. “It’s interesting to see the science and art and creativity all come together in that space.”
Miles said Gillihan is helping him transition into owning and managing the business by working alongside him for a few weeks.
He’s changing the name of the store at 1901 Governor’s Pointe Drive to Great Bottles and also says he plans to introduce a limited supply of home-brewing supplies, “then maybe have a home-brewing club.”
What kind of craft beer interests Miles? “I would like to focus on those kind of things that I call a little nerdy,” he said.
The store, he said, will continue to do wine dinners, which have proven popular, as well as wine classes during the summer.
“It’s very important for me — for continuity — to maintain what Brenda had established,” he said.
In the printing industry, Miles said, his background was in operations management and business development. “The company I was working for gave me a lot of autonomy,” he said.
In Great Bottles, he aims to apply his entrepreneurial skills. “I always had a dream of doing something for myself in some capacity,” he said.
Craft beer is a fun, happy environment to work in, Miles said
Miles, a veteran who lives in Carrollton, said he might add employees as the business grows but is sticking with the same three part-timers for the time being.
“I plan to be here every day,” he said. “It’s important for me to work on growing the business.”
