The Nansemond River High School girls’ outdoor track and field team came into this weekend’s VHSL Group 4A state championship meet fresh off winning its second consecutive 4A South regional championship last Saturday in Milford.
The Lady Warriors bested the 18 other point-earning regional schools by accumulating 118.50 of their own, 32 more than runner-up Midlothian High School. They recorded wins in six different events.
Nansemond River junior Brandeé Johnson placed fourth in the preliminaries of the girls’ 100-meter dash but then finished in first in the finals with a time of 12.02 seconds. She was victorious in the 300-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 41.33 seconds.
Johnson also helped the 4×800-meter relay team claim the regional title with a time of 9:54.50 — nearly 29 seconds faster than its seed time. Sophomore Syaira Richardson, junior Amirah Jones and senior Kara Lyles formed the rest of the speedy quartet.
Senior Zakiya Rashid won the discus throw handily with a 144-foot-7-inch toss, her best of the season.
She also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.60 seconds, another season-best mark, just behind the winner from Phoebus High School, senior Ashaila Bunch, who had a season-best finish in 14.53 seconds.
Senior Candice James out-did her previous fastest mark this season in the 200-meter dash, and her 24.84-second time gave her the regional title.
Syaira Richardson edged out Kara Lyles for first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.82 seconds. Lyles finished in 56.05 seconds, and the times by both runners were season-bests.
The Lady Warriors are looking to repeat as champions in the Virginia High School League Group 4A state outdoor track and field championships at Harrisonburg High School in Harrisonburg. The meet began on Friday and concludes today.
