Suffolk Public Schools is a looking for a variety of volunteers to help out at its new-look elementary summer school.
“Right now, we are looking for anyone who might be interested in volunteering as a classroom assistant during the academic programs in the mornings, or helping out afternoons with one of the enrichment classes,” said Catherine Pichon, principal of the Learning and Enrichment for Academic Progress (LEAP) program.
Enrichment classes span from sports to French, Pichon said, so they’re after a wide variety of expertise.
Also needed, she said, are speakers for in-house “field trips,” and chaperones and helpers for actual field trips.
Plus they need cafeteria monitors, guest readers, special event planners, school-family liaisons, and office, library and coaching assistants.
“We would love to have people donate supplies,” Pichon said. “Teachers have given wish lists for supplies, and we have not been able to get all of them.”
Pichon said it’s a great opportunity for high school students working toward their community service hours required for graduation.
“We’ve had a few” of those students sign up, she said. “We’re thinking we’ll probably get a lot more as we approach to start of the program.
“It would be nice to know ahead of time, so we know we have something for them to do.”
With 510 students, the elementary summer school “will have a lot going on,” Pichon said.
There will be two extra meals to provide, she said, and 30 different classes going on in the afternoon.
“If I had an extra person for each one of those classes, it would be awesome,” she said.
