Summer programs offered at Suffolk Art Gallery

The Suffolk Art League and Suffolk Art Gallery are offering the following art classes and workshops. These will be held at the Suffolk Art Gallery, 118 Bosley Ave. To register, send the student’s name, mailing address, email and daytime phone number along with the appropriate registration fee(s) to Suffolk Art League, P.O. Box 1086, Suffolk, VA 23439. Include a parent name and student’s age for children’s classes only. Please note the age requirements and registration deadlines. Students are reminded to wear clothing appropriate for working with art materials.
Young Artists
Tuesday, June 23, 10-11 a.m.
Tuesday, July 21, 10-11 a.m.

For ages 3 to 5
Instructor: Linda G. Bunch
Registration fee is $6 SAL members/$10 non-members per workshop
Registration deadline is one week prior to workshop
These young artists will have fun while participating in age appropriate art activities. Students will use their natural creativity while exploring a theme through a variety of art materials each month. All necessary materials included.
Summer Art Days
Thursdays, June 25 to Aug. 6 (no class July 2)
Ages 5 to 8 — 10-11:30 a.m.
Ages 9 to 14 — 1-3 p.m.
Instructor: Alicia Johnson
Registration fee: $1 per day per child per day
Registration deadline: No advance registration will be accepted for this program. Registration begins 30 minutes prior to each session on a first-come, first-served basis.
Join the fun on Thursdays at the Suffolk Art Gallery. Students will participate in a different art activity each week. All materials included. Funded in part by a grant from the Suffolk Fine Arts Commission.
Art Camps
Monday-Friday, Aug. 10-14
Ages 6 to 9 — 10 a.m.-noon
Ages 8 to 12 — 1-3 p.m.
Instructor: Sandee Darden
Registration fee: $45 SAL members/$50 non-members
Registration deadline is Aug. 3.
During the week, students will explore different materials and methods of making art. Daily snacks provided.
Pastel Workshop Series
Tuesday, June 16 — Less is More: Minimal Strokes
Students will practice using minimal strokes to build a painting.
Tuesday, June 30 — Using Underpainting
Students will explore toning sanded pastel paper before starting the main piece.
Tuesday, July 14 — Snow
Summer heat got you down? Cool off with discussions of snow and look at examples of lighting and how snow reflects light. Using reference, we will create a snow scene.
Workshops will be held from 9:30 a.m.-noon
Instructor: Debbie Hobbs
Ages: 14 to adult
Registration fee is $27 SAL members/$32 non-members and includes paper and reference materials. Bring your own pastels and supplies or pay a $10 materials fee to use SAL materials in class.
Registration deadline is one week prior to workshop.
Clay Tiki Lantern
Saturday, July 25, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
For ages 13 to adult
Instructor: Linda G. Bunch
Registration fee is $38 SAL members/$50 non-members, includes clay and firing.
Participants will create a stoneware Tiki head figure that can be used as a lantern or just for decoration. There are lots of options to add creative decorations to make yours unique. These will be fired and returned to the Suffolk Art Gallery for pick up.
