Teeing it up for CHKD

Interest is already high for the seventh annual Tee it Up golf tournament on June 24 at Riverfront Golf Club, but there is still room for more participants.
The event is presented by Elizabeth River Circle of the King’s Daughters, which orchestrates different projects with the goal of raising money for the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.
Over the last six years, the tourney has raised close to $60,000 for CHKD.
“Last year we raised $15,000, which was our best year yet, and this year, we’ve got quite a few more golfers,” tournament coordinator Barbara Cooper said.
There were 113 competitors in 2014, and 136 had signed up for this year’s tourney as of June 18, with room for eight more.
Registration is possible right up until the start of the tournament.
“If we’ve got room, we’re not going to turn anyone away,” Cooper said. “We have to cap it at 144.”
On June 24, registration will begin at 11 a.m., during which time Chick-fil-A will provide lunch. The shotgun start for the Best Ball-formatted tourney is set for 1 p.m., but shortly before that, there will be a helicopter ball drop. The winner of the drop receives $500.
Dinner catered by the Riverfront Golf Club and the presentation of awards will follow the tournament.
The Tee it Up event will also feature a silent auction with artwork and city-themed baskets among the items up for bid. The baskets will, in part, contain things provided by businesses that are located in a given city, like Cold Stone Creamery for Suffolk and Doumar’s for Norfolk.
There will be a 50/50 raffle and raffle tickets for prizes. There will also be a hole-in-one contest sponsored by Southern Auto Group. A Lincoln MKT is up for grabs for anyone who aces a designated hole at Riverfront.
The cost to register for the golf tournament is $90 per person.
Sponsorships are still available, and Cooper noted efforts are being made to showcase the company logos of sponsors at the event rather than simply print their company names on signs. The goal is to improve sponsors’ brand recognition among the people at the event.
When asked why people should come out and participate, Cooper said, “Why not?
“You’re doing something fun, you’re out with friends and you’re benefiting the children’s hospital,” she said.
