To the editor:

We would like to thank the clergy, church members and citizens of Suffolk who made the July 7 “From Hate to Healing” prayer vigil a very inspiring and uplifting experience for the city of Suffolk.

By our estimates there were more than 400 people in attendance. We thank the Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church for hosting the event.

The interfaith combined choir was moving, the guest musicians lifted our spirits, the prayers were touching and the testimony from Alana Simmons — whose grandfather, the Rev. Daniel Simmons, was one of the “Charleston 9” victims of the horrific shooting on June 17 — was an inspiration to all who gathered.

This event was a great beginning for a new day of conversation and compassion among the races in the city of Suffolk. Plans are under way for activities to continue growing the spirit of unity that was present on the evening of July 7.
