The Nansemond River High School field hockey team is on a win streak, but it was not until the Lady Warriors’ third consecutive victory, which came on Monday, that their coach was completely pleased with their play during this run.

NR never trailed and then pulled away late against visiting Great Bridge High School for a 4-1 victory on Monday.

“Nobody was playing with the ball too much, we were finding our teammates right away,” Lady Warriors coach Ali Mowry said. “It was a total team effort today. There was no weak link from top to bottom.”

It was a performance similar to the ones Nansemond River produced at the outset of the season a few weeks ago when it employed unselfish play and great passing to defeat Oscar Smith and Deep Creek high schools.

Great Bridge has proven to be a challenging opponent to the Suffolk teams this year, routing King’s Fork High School and forcing a shootout against Lakeland High School.

The Lady Warriors got an early lead on Monday when senior midfielder Ashley Hiltabrand scored unassisted with 17:16 left in the first half.

Lady Wildcats sophomore Peyton Tollaksen tied the game up with 4:20 to go before halftime, but about three and a half minutes later, NR senior midfielder Claire Janek found the inside of the cage with an assist by junior forward Ariana Samuel on a penalty corner.

The score remained 2-1 until just under eight minutes remained in the game when Lady Warriors senior midfielder/forward Jaclyn Mounie scored, assisted by freshman midfielder Sarah Rhiel.

“It was definitely a close game, but I felt like we were in control,” Mowry said.

Helping cement the victory with 2:08 remaining was Janek, scoring her second goal of the game, this one assisted by sophomore forward Ashlyn Rogers.

Nansemond River ended up with 10 offensive penalty corners, while Great Bridge had six.

Lady Warriors senior goalkeeper Alex Wilde recorded three saves, and “she was super-aggressive in the cage,” Mowry said.

The coach considered using a special defensive strategy to stop Tollaksen if she proved to be controlling the game, but Mowry refrained, again noting, “I felt like we were in total control.”

Nansemond River (6-1) visits King’s Fork (0-6) on Wednesday evening.
