The Oscar Smith High School football team’s reign in the Southeastern District continues.
The Tigers extended their nine-year-long district win streak by another game on Friday night with a 48-0 victory over host Lakeland High School.
“We’ve got to be more consistent,” Cavaliers coach Kevin Knight said. “Be consistent, play four quarters.”
The coach noted that his team struggled in all phases of the game, but added, “I’ve still got the utmost faith in my guys.”
Lakeland has had a highly challenging schedule through its first three games this season, playing district powerhouses Western Branch High School and Oscar Smith back-to-back. But Knight sees his team turning things around from its 0-3 start.
“I believe in my guys,” he said. “I think we can win out.”
The Cavaliers experienced some success against the Tigers on the ground on Friday, gaining 127 yards on 31 carries.
Junior running back/defensive back Damontra Milteer led the way for Lakeland with 12 carries for 64 yards, a solid follow-up to his strong showing against the Bruins last week.
“He’s a bright spot,” Knight said. “Every game he’s getting better and better. He’s a guy who’s really stepping up, on both sides of the ball.”
The Cavs were without junior wide receiver/cornerback Alajuwun Langston due to a hip injury he suffered last week.
“It was a game-time decision, and we sat him down tonight,” Knight said.
Lakeland (0-3) visits Great Bridge High School next Friday night.
