Loss of trees is a disgrace

To the editor:
On Thursday morning while doing errands, I passed by the old Obici property on North Main Street and — to my shock and horror — I saw the beautiful trees that have been there for more than 50 years were lying on the ground in pieces.
Backhoes were everywhere, and large trucks were entering the site to haul the “debris” away.
I voiced my opinion in the survey the paper had a while back, hoping this would not happen. I understand that some trees had to be removed but my favorite of them all, right by Duke Automotive, right beside the road, was destroyed.
Tears came to my eyes.
I have loved watching that tree go through the seasons for the 18 years I have lived here. I guess that’s just how it goes. Money trumps everything, and these beautiful trees were simply in the way.
I know that this letter will fall on deaf ears, and I am not usually one to express my views or opinions in public, but this was one time I just wanted my voice heard, even though it will not do any good for those trees.
