Lady Bulldogs shut out NSA

The Norfolk Academy girls’ tennis team visited Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on Tuesday, dealing the Lady Saints their first official conference loss of the season, and it came in lopsided fashion — 9-0.
The Lady Bulldogs are last year’s Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state runners-up.
“They’re going to win states this year in D1,” NSA coach Sheryl Raulston said. “That’s how good they are.”
Norfolk Academy lost that title in 2014 to Cape Henry Collegiate School, which the Lady Saints host on Thursday.
“They’re the best two in the state,” Raulston said of NA and Cape Henry. “We’re playing the best of the best. We just happened to have the best teams in our conference.”
Nansemond-Suffolk was riding high last week after defeating the defending 2014 VISAA Division II state champion Hampton Roads Academy. But to play Division I teams like the Lady Bulldogs is to face competition on a whole other level, Raulston said.
She noted Norfolk Academy’s top three or four players play tennis tournaments year-around. The Lady Bulldogs’ No. 1 player, Catie Sullivan, is only a freshman, but she is a four-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net and is ranked 114th in the nation in her age group.
Raulston and the Lady Saints are not letting this week shake their confidence, though.
“We’re playing for state,” she said. “We’re really playing for D2 state.”
