It will be easier for Suffolk residents to help provide Thanksgiving dinner for people in need this year.
For the first time, Suffolk will have a drop-off site for the Mayflower Marathon, an around-the-clock food drive sponsored by radio stations 106.9 The Fox and FM99. With two sites last year, the marathon collected enough food and cash to provide 580,186 meals through local food banks and their partner agencies, said Tidewater Communications’ marketing director Sonja Morrell.
Volunteers at First Team Subaru, 4834B Bridge Road, will take donations continuously from 5:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22. Other donation sites are at Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach and Coliseum Marketplace in Hampton.
Proceeds from Suffolk and Virginia Beach will be distributed through the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, Morrell said. Contributions dropped off at the Hampton location will go to the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank.
All donations will be taken directly to the food banks for pickup by the nonprofits that will distribute or prepare the Thanksgiving Day meals, Morrell said.
Organizers specifically chose the North Suffolk car dealership because of its proximity to Western Branch and Portsmouth, Morrell said.
With the exception of fresh vegetables, people can donate any sort of food, including the traditional hams, turkeys and favorite sides: canned cranberry sauce, boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes and canned yams.
“It’s amazing to see someone roll up with 10 or 15 turkeys in their trunk,” Morrell said. “We welcome any size donation, small or large. Every little bit adds up.”
Approximately 1,000 turkeys were collected during last year’s Mayflower Marathon, she added.
Most Mayflower proceeds go to Thanksgiving meals, Morrell said.
People don’t even have to get out of the car to drop off their donations, Morrell said. But if they do, they will be in for a good time — Rick Rumble, Shelley and the entire FM99 team along with Mike Arlo, Tim Parker and the Fox staff will be broadcasting live from all three locations.
