The Nansemond River High School girls’ basketball team traveled to Orlando, Fla. and started its run in the KSA Holiday Tournament by handing Ponte Vedra High School of Florida a 53-39 defeat on Tuesday.
Lady Warriors coach R. Calvin Mason Sr. said he did not think his team shot the ball well, “but defensively, I thought we did a good job today.”
Despite the offensive struggles, Nansemond River senior guard/forward Aneka Yelverton led the Lady Warriors with 20 points to go with five rebounds.
Mason expects junior forward/guard Daijah Norris to return to starting-caliber form after coming back from a hamstring injury, and she showed signs of it on Tuesday, contributing nine points and eight rebounds.
“She’s still rounding back into shape, still coming off the bench right now, but like I said, she’ll get there,” Mason said. “She’s an important part of what we do.”
Nansemond River (7-2) took on Woodbridge High School of Irvine, Calif., on Wednesday.
