A local nonprofit organization will hold its third annual Youthful Praise Workshop and Concert in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 15-16.

SCM Vision will host the workshops from 6 to 9 p.m. that Friday and on that Saturday morning. Participants then will return at 3 p.m. Saturday to hold the concert.

Participants will learn about miming, praise dancing and stepping, as well as how to direct choir and pertinent Bible verses, said Sylvia Copeland Murphy, the founder of SCM Vision.

During the concert, they will put into practice what they learned during the workshop, Murphy said.

Along the way, they will learn skills like how to work with others as well as the history of the Civil Rights movement, she said.

“We wanted to bring awareness to our young people about what Dr. King did for us as far as our civil rights,” Murphy said.

The cost for the workshop is $10, but it is free to young people who live in public housing. Ages 6 to 18 are able to participate.

Murphy said 170 children participated in the first year, with 110 children in the second year. So far, 65 are signed up for this year.

Murphy also said all participants and volunteers are eligible to receive a scholarship the organization awards annually.

The event will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 2635 E. Washington St., where the organization and its programs are based.

“Oak Grove Baptist Church has really partnered with us,” Murphy said. “It’s a community-wide effort for our young people.”

SCM Vision provides many other programs throughout the year, including T.R.U.T.H., which stands for “The Real U That Hides.” The program provides support services to individuals in need, including those re-entering society after being incarcerated, those who are low income or single parents.

Other programs include a one-day college seminar for students and parents; tutorial services; a summer enrichment camp; school and community partnerships; and the Mary’s Lamb project, where young people distribute stuffed lambs with Bible verses attached to nursing home residents.
