Snow, rain, wind

About two inches of snow and an equivalent amount of rain are forecast to fall on Suffolk this weekend.

National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Proch said the snow is expected to begin in Suffolk around 7 to 9 a.m. Friday.

“With the ground conditions already going to be cold, the snow is going to start to stick on the roadways pretty quickly, and it could cause some travel issues during the late morning to early afternoon hours,” he said.

Proch said a transition to rain will take place Friday afternoon, and it will rain overnight and most of the day Saturday. It then will snow Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

“There’s going to be a fair amount of rain,” Proch said. “We’re looking at high temperatures on Friday in the upper 30s to right around 40, so it’s going to be pretty cold rain coming down pretty hard.”

Inland winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour also are expected, Proch said.

“That could also be an issue as far as downing small limbs and some weaker trees,” he said.

City crews spent Thursday preparing for the storm. Three brine trucks criss-crossed the city, applying brine pre-treatment to primary roads, bridges and elevated surfaces.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink said in a press release Thursday that the city did not anticipate the storm affecting trash and recycling collections. However, she did encourage citizens to remove their cans as soon as possible because of the potential for reduced visibility.

Removing vehicles from the street also will help if snowplows need to be put into operation, she said.

No changes were expected to Suffolk Transit schedules, but service may terminate early in the event of icy conditions, Klink said.

Klink also asked motorists to stay home if possible and, if they do have to drive, to clear snow and ice from windows and lights, slow down, remember that visibility is limited and stay away from Public Works trucks.
