James Hollis Deaton, 80, of Suffolk, died March 12, 2016, in his home. He was a native of Suffolk, predeceased by his parents, Nicholas Arnold Deaton and Annie Maude Cutchins Deaton. James is also predeceased by a brother, Nicholas Arnold Deaton Jr. Mr. Deaton retired from the A&P Tea Company after 43 years in 1998. Following that, he worked for the Military Order of the Purple Heart for 12 years. James was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and Sunday School records secretary for many years. He served on the nursing home ministry team.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Patricia Turner Deaton; his son, James H. Deaton Jr.; granddaughters, Emily and Catherine; his daughter, Mary Sene (husband, Mike); grandsons, Brice and JJ.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 19, 2016, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 237 N. Main St., Suffolk, with Dr. Thurman R. Hayes Jr. and the Rev. Charles W. Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, March 18, 2016, from 7 to 8 p.m. at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W.
