Leon Nathaniel Harris, 79, of Greenwood Road, Suffolk, died Saturday, April 16, 2016, at his residence. He was a native of Virginia Beach and the son of the late Elisha Harris and Cora Elizabeth Harris.
He attended Princess Anne County Training School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree and master’s in agriculture from Virginia State University and completed advanced study at The College of William & Mary and Old Dominion University. He was formerly employed at Paul D. Camp Community College. Mr. Harris was a member of Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., president, Holland Lodge No. 256, PHA Secretary and Past Master, Holland-Holy Neck Civic League, NAACP and Children’s Center in Franklin.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Martha Murray Harris; daughter, Cassaundra H. Jirau (Alex), of Perry Hall, Md.; two sons, Albert T. Harris, of the home and Carl A. Harris (Myra), of Raeford, N.C.; one brother, James Harris (Catherine), of Virginia Beach; sisters, Cora Basnight (Earl), Margaret Spence, both of Virginia Beach, Shirley Hinton, of Chesapeake, and Eunice Harris (Henry), of Largo, Md.; brothers-in-law, Windsor O. Murray, of Burgaw, N.C., and Lucius Murray, of Abbeville, Ga.; sister-in-law, Annie Harris, of Virginia Beach; other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Gethsemane Baptist Church, 1656 Copeland Road, Suffolk, officiated by the Rev. Ernest Simmons Jr. A wake will be held Friday, April 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Crocker Funeral Home. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home Inc.
