Shawn Moose, a member of the USA Homeschool baseball team, committed on April 27 to play baseball for Trinity Baptist University.

He signed a national letter of intent at his home. He has been a member of the USA Homeschool team for a year.

“In the end I want everyone to know that God made this happen, not me,” Moose said.

He started playing baseball when he was 4 years old, and ever since he has played with a will that has gotten him to his signing day. This year he was named to the 2016 Atlantic Region Rawlings/Perfect Game as an honorable mention.

“He is an all around player, the type that can step on the field and do what needs to get done,” said his coach and father, Tommy Moose.

Tommy Moose has 23 years of experience coaching junior varsity and varsity sports as well as showcase teams that focus on allowing players to get recognized for their abilities. This was exactly what Shawn Moose did by playing for the Old Dominion University Hitters summer team and the Old Dominion Hitters Showcase in the fall.

Shawn Moose plays shortstop and outfield positions. He is having an amazing senior year hitting .625 at the plate and pitching to a 1.00 ERA on the mound.  His batting average is above .500 for his high school career.

“He works tirelessly on his game year round, having no real offseason,” Tommy Moose said. “He is extremely dedicated to improving in all facets of the game.”

“He had made a verbal commitment about a week before but wasn’t quite sure if he would go there, because it was a nine-hour drive from home,” the elder Moose said. “But by the time signing day came, he was relieved with his choice.”

USA Homeschool has athletes that come from all over the Hampton Roads area. This program allows those who are not a part of a public or private school curriculum to play organized games. It also enables students who are being home schooled to be recognized for the talents they may have in their respective sport. The program is in its first year.

Moose plans to study secondary education when he gets to Trinity Baptist, but he feels like his true calling is serving the Lord.

“I’m going for secondary education right now, but God may change my heart and I (would) study theology,” Moose said. “It’s whatever He wants.”

Trinity Baptist University was not his only choice. He said he considered other schools that might pique his interest, such as North Carolina Wesleyan and Norfolk State University.
