Mary Byrd Martin

On Friday, May 13, 2016, Mary “PeeWee” Byrd Martin, 75, transitioned to her heavenly home from Sentara Obici Hospital.
Mary graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1958 and completed her bachelor’s degree in 1962 from St. Paul’s College. She received her master’s degree from Norfolk State University in 1989.
Mary retired from the Suffolk Public Schools system after more than 37 years as a reading specialist and guidance counselor.
A faithful member of First Baptist Church Mahan Street, Mary served in various ministries.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Melba Williams (Herman), of Haymarket; her son, Lloyd G. Martin Jr. (Robin), of Boulder, Colo.; her grandson, Herman Williams IV; two granddaughters, Marley Martin and Traci Alexa Williams; one sister, Evelyn Edwards (Morgan); one brother, Harry Byrd (Kathleen); one goddaughter, Mary Kristen Fojtik; a devoted friend, Frederick Chapman; and three “special girls,” Santiera Yearling, Nakari Blunt and Kori Blunt.
A memorial service and the Zeta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony will occur in the chapel of Crocker Funeral Home on May 19, 2016, from 7 to 8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Mahan Street. The eulogy will be given by the Rev. Steven G. Blunt. Professional services have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home. Interment will be at Carver Memorial Cemetery.
